A catch basin is a below-grade collection box with a grated opening at the surface. Inside, a sump at the bottom traps sediment and debris before water exits through a connected outlet pipe to a dry well, storm drain, or other discharge point. This sediment-trapping function prevents debris from clogging downstream pipes and helps protect water quality in Long Island's sensitive coastal environment. Without adequate surface collection points, rainwater pools in low spots, floods against foundations, and creates soggy, unusable yard areas.
