A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe that collects water from the surrounding soil and channels it by gravity to a discharge point such as a dry well, storm drain, or daylight outlet. On Long Island's South Shore, where sandy soils move water quickly, French drains intercept subsurface water that accumulates against foundations during heavy rainfall. On the North Shore, where clay-heavy soils retain moisture, they provide a critical escape pathway for water that would otherwise keep the ground saturated for days after a storm.

Installation begins with a comprehensive drainage assessment, observing water movement, mapping accumulation areas, and planning the optimal route and discharge point. Trenches are excavated to eighteen to thirty-six inches deep depending on the application, with a consistent downward pitch verified by laser level. We line the trench with geotextile filter fabric, place clean washed gravel, lay perforated PVC or corrugated HDPE pipe with perforations facing down, then wrap the gravel envelope with fabric to keep soil out. All connections are secured with proper fittings, and cleanout access points are installed at turns and junctions. Foundation French drains intercept groundwater at footing level to relieve hydrostatic pressure, while yard French drains address shallow subsurface water that creates soggy, unusable lawn areas. After installation, we backfill with topsoil and restore the lawn surface.
