We build seating walls using Cambridge and Nicolock interlocking block as well as natural fieldstone and ledgestone. The cap is the most important material choice since it is the surface people sit on. Natural bluestone is our most popular cap on Long Island for its smooth, naturally cool surface and timeless blue-gray color, though granite and limestone caps are also excellent options. Every seating wall starts with a compacted aggregate footing that extends below the frost line to prevent settling and frost heaving. Seating height is typically 18 to 22 inches for comfort, with a wall width of 12 to 16 inches. Configuration options include straight runs along patio edges, curved walls around fire pits, and L-shaped or U-shaped layouts that create enclosed outdoor rooms.
