The key to a successful resurfacing project is an honest assessment of your existing driveway. Not every driveway is a candidate for an overlay, and we will never recommend resurfacing when a full replacement is the right call. During our free on-site evaluation, we inspect the entire driveway surface and base for signs of structural failure, including deep alligator cracking, significant settling, poor drainage, or base erosion. If the foundation is compromised, an overlay will only mask problems temporarily, and we believe in doing the job right the first time.

When your driveway qualifies for resurfacing, our process begins with thorough surface preparation. Before laying the new asphalt, we apply a tack coat to the existing surface. This adhesive layer creates a bond between the old and new asphalt, preventing delamination and ensuring structural integrity. We then spread and compact a fresh layer of hot-mix asphalt, typically one and a half to two inches thick, using the same heavy rollers and techniques we employ for new installations.

Long Island's climate plays an important role in our resurfacing specifications. The freeze-thaw cycles that define our winters can stress the bond between old and new asphalt layers, so we take extra care with surface preparation and tack coat application to create the strongest possible adhesion. We also pay close attention to edge details and transitions, feathering the new surface into garage aprons, sidewalks, and curbing for a seamless, professional appearance.

Drainage is another critical consideration for Long Island driveways. Over time, many driveways develop low spots or lose their original pitch, leading to standing water that accelerates deterioration. During a resurfacing project, we have the opportunity to correct minor grading issues and improve water flow, directing runoff away from your foundation and toward appropriate drainage points.

After resurfacing, your driveway should be treated like a brand-new surface. We recommend staying off the driveway for at least twenty-four to forty-eight hours and avoiding sharp turns for the first few weeks. Once cured, the same maintenance schedule applies as for new asphalt: sealcoat every two to three years, address cracks promptly, and keep the surface clean of debris and chemicals.
