Professional retaining walls for Old Westbury homeowners. Estate community, large lots, high-value projects
Old Westbury's sprawling multi-acre estates — set along winding roads like Store Hill Road and Wheatley Road — feature rolling terrain, wooded hillsides, and dramatic grade changes that make retaining walls one of the most important hardscape investments on these Gold Coast properties. Brothers Paving & Masonry builds estate-scale retaining walls throughout Old Westbury that stabilize slopes, create level terraces for outdoor living, and add architectural structure to landscapes measured in acres rather than square feet.
Our Old Westbury retaining wall projects are among the largest in our portfolio. The village's two-acre minimum lot sizes mean wall systems can extend hundreds of linear feet across a property, managing grade transitions along driveways, around pools, between terraced garden levels, and along property boundaries. We work with Cambridge and Nicolock segmental systems for engineered structural walls, natural fieldstone and Connecticut granite for estate-character walls, and massive boulders for naturalistic retention on wooded hillsides.
Every Old Westbury wall is engineered from the ground up. We excavate to stable subsoil, compact an oversized aggregate footing, install drainage aggregate and perforated pipe behind the wall face, and reinforce with geogrid at calculated intervals based on wall height and soil loads. Cap stones in natural bluestone, limestone, or granite provide a finished edge that reflects the estate-quality standard Old Westbury demands.
Old Westbury sits on the glacial moraine where Long Island's North Shore hills transition into the flatter Hempstead Plain to the south. This transitional geology creates varied terrain — the northern portions of the village have significant rolling hills and wooded slopes, while the southern areas near the Long Island Expressway are more gently undulating. Soil conditions range from sandy gravel to dense glacial till with embedded boulders, and we encounter all of these within single properties on Old Westbury's multi-acre lots.
The village's estate character dates to the Gold Coast era, and many properties retain original stone walls, terraced gardens, and graded drives that are now approaching or exceeding a century in age. These aging structures frequently show signs of failure — leaning, cracking, and displacement caused by decades of freeze-thaw cycling and inadequate drainage. Brothers Paving specializes in replacing these heritage walls with modern engineered systems that restore structural integrity while maintaining the estate aesthetic.
Old Westbury's dense tree canopy creates additional challenges for retaining walls. Mature root systems can destabilize wall footings, and leaf litter can clog drainage pipes if not properly protected. We route walls to avoid major root zones where possible, install root barriers where proximity is unavoidable, and specify filter fabric on all drainage pipe to prevent clogging from organic debris.
With home values routinely exceeding $3 million and estate properties reaching $15 million or more, Old Westbury homeowners invest in retaining walls that perform structurally for generations. We engineer every wall to exceed industry standards because the cost of failure — in property damage, landscape loss, and remediation expense — far exceeds the cost of building it right the first time.

Learn MoreOld Westbury's rolling terrain and dense tree canopy create unique wall engineering requirements. The village's glacial till soil often contains boulders at excavation depth that require heavy equipment to remove before footing placement. Mature tree root systems near wall alignments need careful management — cutting major roots can destabilize trees, while leaving them too close to the wall can compromise the footing over time. The Village of Old Westbury requires permits for retaining walls over 4 feet in height and may require engineering drawings stamped by a licensed professional. Properties near wetland areas or drainage courses may need additional environmental review. We manage all permitting and engineering coordination.
Real projects we've completed for Old Westbury homeowners.
Built a three-tier retaining wall system across 160 linear feet to manage a 9-foot grade change between the main house terrace and the lower lawn on a 4-acre estate. Used Cambridge Olde English Wall in Toffee-Onyx blend with natural bluestone caps. Each tier at 3 feet with planted terraces between levels featuring boxwood hedging and perennial beds. Full geogrid reinforcement, perforated drainage at each tier, and integrated LED accent lighting along all cap lines.
Scope: 480 sq ft total wall face, 3 tiers, 160 linear ft, geogrid, drainage, lighting
Placed a 75-linear-foot natural boulder retaining wall along a wooded driveway approach to manage a 3.5-foot grade change. Hand-selected 40 boulders averaging 1,500–2,500 lbs each, placed with excavator and interlocked for stability. Installed drainage aggregate behind the boulder face with perforated pipe discharging to a dry well at the low point. Preserved all existing mature oaks within 10 feet of the wall alignment.
Scope: 75 linear ft boulder wall, 40 boulders, drainage system, tree preservation
